Smith calls his collaboration with Boo Hewerdine “a magical folly, made in a great spirit, a record that was fun to make and sounds that way.” Smith and Hewerdine were introduced in London, wrote eight songs in a week and were promptly offered a record deal by Nigel Grainge. When they subsequently realized they didn’t have enough songs for an album, they spent a frantic week writing at a hotel in Austin to round out the collection. Rolling Stone gave Evidence 3 1/2 stars and it became something of a cult classic (translation: one of those albums that people claim to have heard but no one ever actually bought).
